Bulgaria's European Commissioner Meglena Kuneva, whose portfolio is consumer protection, vowed on Sunday to tackle the safety of consumer services.
There is not enough data on services offered throughout the bloc to ensure proper consumer protection in the services area, Kuneva told a round-table discussion in Sofia.
"We are fighting against over-regulation in the EU, but every time someone dies, we are asked why there is no EU-wide legislation that might have prevented that,' she added.
The EU has a system for swapping information regarding potentially dangerous goods (RAPEX), but no similar structure regarding services.
It would take years to create a similar platform for the services sector, Kuneva said, but vowed to tackle the issue during her term in office.
Currently most safety rules for services are set at a national level, although some sectors, like transport, are regulated also on the European level.
