Paul Wolfowitz's future as president of the World Bank will be decided on Sunday, the last day of this year's traditional spring meeting of the bank's board of governors.

But instead of discussing measures to promote good governance practices around the world, this year's meeting will focus on the scandal in its own ranks.

Wolfowitz, a former key member of US President Bush's administration and one of the main architects of the war in Iraq, admitted earlier this week to helping his partner, Libyan-born Shaha Riza, to land a top job at the US State Department, paid by the bank.

He is now under intense pressure to resign from the bank's employees, with whom he has reportedly clashed on a number of issues, and many board members.

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson voiced on Saturday the support of the White House, and African countries are also backing him.

But he faces stern opposition from Europe, with Germany, France and the UK all denouncing his actions and threatening to cut contributions unless he stepped down. Anti-poverty campaigners have also demanded his resignation.
