Ukraine's Prime Minister Demands Parallel Parliamentary, Presidential Elections

World | April 11, 2007, Wednesday // 00:00

The Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych demanded Wednesday the pro-term parliamentary elections to be held simultaneously with the presidential ones.

Yanukovych made the announcement in front of 50,000 his supporters on the central Independence Square in the capital city of Kiev.

Meanwhile, the secretary of the Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko denied the information that the head of state is to postpone the parliamentary elections, their date being set at May 27.

Thousands Ukrainians staged continuous protests against the presidential decree for the Parliament's dissolution, which was issued on Tuesday.

Becoming aware of the decision, the Ukrainian MPs approached the Constitutional Court to judge whether it is in compliance with the constitution.

They have even adopted a law, stating that they didn't have to comply with the President. The newly hatched bill obliges MPs to only follow the will of the Parliament.
