Serbia should be part of the international body that will oversee the independence of Kosovo, Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin said at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on Friday.

It is important for Bulgaria that all EU member states reach an a common position on the plan proposed by UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari, Kalfin told his EU counterparts in Bremen.

Ahtisaari's plan, which he presented to the UN Security Council earlier this week, recommends Kosovo's independence as the "only viable solution" for the province.

Ahtisaari proposes a transfer of control from the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to a similar body under the auspices of the EU.

The EU mission, who would have a term of at least two years, would oversee Kosovo's judiciary, law enforcement and legislature. It would have veto power over local government decisions and the authority to remove officials obstructing its goals

Bulgaria is prepared to feature heavily in this mission, Kalfin added.

The "Gymnich" meeting of EU's foreign ministers will end on Saturday. Other topics on its agenda include the Middle East peace process, Iran's nuclear program and the British hostages in Iran.

Kalfin could also raise the issue of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya.
