2 US Soldiers Engaged in Fight in Bulgaria

Crime | March 27, 2007, Tuesday // 00:00

Two US soldiers exchanged fists and ended beaten up by Bulgarians late on Sunday night in a disco in Sliven, local 24 hours daily reported on Monday.

The news came out two days after the accident in the Imperia disco, as it, for some reason, was not included in the regular police report.

The soldiers were pretty drunk, threw nuts to the people around and to the bar and behaved quite rudely when finally three Bulgarian boys went and slapped them across their faces, witnesses said.

"I'm tired of giving explanations to the police after every drunken brawl that happens in my club," Yordan Lechkov, Mayor of Sliven and former National Football Team player said.

This is in the expertise of the military police notwithstanding it was a personal brawl, officials from the Sliven Police Department commented.

"We expect the Bulgarian authorities to conduct full investigation on the case," US Ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle said on Monday for the private bTV channel.

The US regret what had happened, Beyrle said and added this surely has been just a wrangle in a nightclub.

This case will in no way harm the cooperation between the country and the United States, officials from the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said.

According to the signed agreement, US military officers in Bulgaria have to obey Bulgarian laws.

A total of 250 US soldiers are now in Bulgaria to take part in the joint military training "Thracian Spring".
