A crumbling wall at an accumulation lake in southern Bulgaria has almost failed, raising the prospect of a flood that might cut off one of the main roads linking Bulgaria to Greece, Darik News reported on Tuesday.

The accumulation lake is near the village of Domishte, in the lower foothills of the Rodopi mountain ridge, 20 kilometers south of the town of Kardzhali.

Should the wall fail altogether, the resulting flood would do irreparable damage as it would race down the stream of the Varbitza river, local authorities say.

The waters could reach the E85 European road, which connects southern Bulgaria to Greece through the Makaza pass, cutting access to the pass.

The water level in the accumulation lake rose after torrential rains in the past week and continues to rise despite the existing safeguards that are slowly draining the water away.

The accumulation lake is operated by a company owned by Bulgaria's Agriculture Ministry, which has been notified of the situation.
