Russia is holding a national day of mourning on Wednesday after three separate disasters across the country killed at least 173 people over three days.

At least 104 people died after a methane explosion ripped through a coal mine in Kemerovo, Siberia, on Monday. A further 62 people died when fire destroyed a retirement home this morning. Seven people died when a passenger plane of Siberia- based airline UTair crashed in central Russia three days ago.

"The president of Russia has signed a decree on declaring a day of mourning in connection with the tragic events in the Russian Federation," Putin's press service said in an e-mailed statement.

Flags will fly at half-staff at all government buildings across the country. The president also suggested that television and radio companies, as well as theatres and cinemas, cancel entertainment.
