Sofia Public Transport Drivers Demand Upped Wages

Business | March 19, 2007, Monday // 00:00

Professional Unions have demanded a 50% increase in the wages of public transport drivers in Sofia, Darik News revealed.

About 150 drivers have already quit, looking for better-paid professions, union leaders told Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov.

Borissov has backed the demands and said the government should abolish a bill that prevents such raises and leaves no room for keeping up with inflation.

Most drivers currently receive about BGN 400 a month and want up to BGN 250 more, the mayor explained, adding that the pay checks could be upped if the municipality agrees on a deal with concessionaires.

He said he hoped that the problem would be solved before it escalates into protests and strikes.
