3 More Years in Jail Menace Bulgarian Nurses in Libya
Politics | March 13, 2007, TuesdayThe medics will have to serve the sentence although they are jailed for more than eight years now.
Osman Bizanti assured it is not necessary the lawyer Georgi Gatev to join the defence team, as the participation of Hari Haralampiev would be enough.
Bizanti also said the trial will drag if the Libyan claimants increase in number. Until now they are three.
"We should not be so worried about the slander trial at present aswhat really menace the nurses is confirming the death sentences. The Libyans say that a drawing man is not afraid of rain," Bizanti added.
The Libyan lawyer claims that the slander trial's outcome is not going to have an effect on the HIV one.
The main purpose of the trial is to be established if the five women lied when saying they were put to tortures.
The three Libyan officers, who instituted the slander trial against the Bulgarians, demand compensations set at 17 M Libyan dinars.
Lawyer Bizanti announced again he expects the death sentences' appeal will be launched at the end of April or the beginning of May.
After the first hearing the court should decide if it accepts the complaint. If it is rejected, there would be at most one more session, Bizanti explained. Then the prosecutor's office would appeal the nurses' acquittal on the accusations of currency trade, alcohol selling and violating the local moral values.
Osman Bizanti promised he will visit the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor in Judeyda prison next week.
The medics were sentenced to death for intentionally infecting more than 400 Libyan children with HIV.
