Obligatory Doctors' Union Membership in Bulgaria "Not Needed"

Politics | March 11, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

Bulgaria's Health Minister Radoslav Gaydarski thinks that the membership in the Bulgarian Doctors' Union should not be obligatory.

The organization should be democratic and give doctors a choice on whether to be its members, Gaydarski added.

The Minister believes that 90% of the medics in the country would still join the Union if it were voluntary. His comments came after the Union leaders announced at a press conference that they would start protests if the government doesn't pull back a law change that makes membership in the union a voluntary act.

Up until now, all doctors had to be part of the union if they wanted to practice. Many hadn't been paying their BGN 4 monthly fee, and were thus faced with having their licenses revoked. Gaydarski was one of those doctors.
