Trucks carrying garbage from the capital Sofia gained access to the dumpsite near the village of Tsalapitsa in central Bulgaria after officials acquiesced to the demands of protesting villagers, Darik News reported.

Close to a hundred villagers protested earlier in the day against the sudden depositing of a large amount of garbage, which they fear could cause a major health and environmental disaster.

But they withdrew after the mayor of Plovdiv, Ivan Chomakov, agreed to their demands for BGN 3 M in funding for infrastructure projects.

The village of Tsalapitsa is part of the Plovdiv municipality and the nearby dumpsite is used to store the garbage from Bulgaria's second largest city.

The Sofia city hall exhausted its own dumpsite capacity and is now forced to sign contracts with local authorities from the Plovdiv and Karlovo regions in central Bulgaria, the capital's mayor Boyko Borisov said last week.

Borissov had previously said that local authorities are trying to swindle Sofia with the terms of accepting 280,000 tons of the capital's piling trash.

Still, he now admits that Sofia has no other choice and would even settle for unfavourable deals as long as it means getting rid of the stinking bales.
