Bulgaria is hopeful that Washington officials will lobby in Brussels for bringing back to life its two decommissioned nuke units.

Karen Harbert, Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Affairs with the US Department of Energy, is planning to put the issue on the table during her upcoming meeting with EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.

Karen Harbert made the promise while conferring with Bulgaria's Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov, who is paying a visit to the United States.

Bulgaria shut down reactors 3 and 4 at its sole Kozloduy nuclear power station to meet the safety requirements of the European Union.

Bulgaria joined the European Union on January 1, 2007.
