The Prosecutor's Office in Bulgaria's Gabrovo has raised charges against an unknown assailant in the case of a local man who died in Spain, reportedly following an illegal organ removal.

Atanas Predov, 34, died in the end of 2006 while he was in Spain and his family were told he had passed away from alcohol poisoning. They doubted the information and insisted on autopsy in Bulgaria. The medical examiners found out that the man's kidneys and corneas were removed without the consent of the family.

An investigation was launched into the case and a three-member team of experts deduced that the organs were taken with surgical precision most likely while he was still alive. In a report of 23 pages and about 80 photos, the experts state that there is no other visible cause of Predov's death apart from the organ removals. They say that the cause of death that the Spanish doctors pointed out - alcohol poisoning is incompatible with the removal of the kidneys for transplantation.

Prosecutors will now demand all the man's medical records from Spain. According to the law there the organ removal would only have been legal if the man was braindead at the time.
