Bulgaria Still Blacklisted as Intellectual Piracy Heaven

Business | February 18, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

The International Intellectual Property Alliance has recommended that Bulgaria stays blacklisted among the countries where piracy is still alive and well.

The so-called 301 List is prepared each year by the IIPA and the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and includes the countries where the US business suffers great losses due to the disregard of copyrights.

The US is said to lose about USD 7 M per year from unlicensed music sales in Bulgaria and another USD 24 M from software piracy. The percentage of pirated music on Bulgaria's market amounts to 75%, while the unsolicited software is 69%, the IIPA claims, adding that part of the pirate production market is in the hands of the organized crime.

The Alliance has recommended that Bulgaria increases its measures against Internet piracy and mostly against Internet service providers and Local Area Networks.
