Bulgaria's Schools to Take Down Blackboards

Politics | February 13, 2007, Tuesday // 00:00

In the next two years all blackboards will retire from Bulgaria's schools and be replaced by white ones.
The era of chalk dust is coming at an end, Education Minister Daniel Valchev said, explaining that very soon all teachers will only use markers.
Some former students are facing the news with mixed reactions. "On the one hand I really hated having to sponge the blackboard and drag a bucket of water through the corridors whenever it was my turn to be in charge of cleaning the damn thing," Diana Stoyanova sighed. "But we did have some good times pinching some of those chalks to draw our hopscotch patterns with."
Until now, the vast majority of Bulgaria's schools had black wooden boards and teachers used chalk to write on them. Students had to take turns in making sure the board is cleaned for the next period. This included getting fresh water and taking down the chalk with a wet sponge during every break.
