Bulgarian Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison in Malta

A Bulgarian citizen was sentenced to 12 years in prison in Malta for drug trafficking on Moday.

Atanas Dimitrov, 32, was found guilty of two attempts to transport drugs illegally. The first time he tried to smuggle 45 capsules and the second time 65, carrying them in his stomach in the period between October and December 2003.

The defendant confessed he had an accomplice in Istanbul, who helped him with the drug traffic in Malta.

Dimitrov was arrested on Christmas Eve of 2003 right after his arrival in Malta. He will have to pay a fine of over USD 60,000. If he fails to do it, he will have to stay in prison for another 18 months, besides the 12 years in his sentence.
