Sofia City Court decided to leave behind bars Georgi Peykov, the killer of the taxi driver Emil Emilov, who was murdered in the early hours of last week's Friday.

Peykov surrendered to police voluntarily later the same day it became clear Monday. Initial reports detailed the police search that supposedly led to the arrest. Some media claimed the police had backtracked the cab's route with the help of the taxi company and then got footage from a camera showing the killer get off to buy cigarettes.

The judge on the case Georgi Kolev said Peykov has several pending lawsuits against him.

The killer may appeal in the Sofia Court of Appeals by February 16.

Peykov had been using drugs, but he's been clean for the past five years, including in the day of the murder, his lawyer pointed out, refuting reports that classified his client as a drug addict.

When hiring the cab, Peykov told the driver he had no money to pay for it and proposed to leave his ID as guarantee. The driver accepted the proposal, but when they arrived he insisted Peykov pay his bill or else her would call 50 other taxi drivers to beat him black and blue, the killer said in court. He then tried to find a couple of his friends to land him money and even went home but his mother was asleep. He tried to jump from the moving cab but the driver grabbed his arm. At this moment he got scared, closed his eyes and started prodding with the knife and ran away.
