Russian police have detained two Chechens on suspicions of involvement in the murder of famous investigative reporter and HR activist Anna Politkovskaya, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported on Saturday.

The newspaper quoted a source close to the investigation in the report. The source had said that the two detained suspects were tracked down with help of satellite photos.

Russian Prosecutor-General's office was not available for comment.

The 48-year-old journalist of Novaya Gazetta, known for her critics of President Vladimir Putin, was found shot dead outside her apartment building in Moscow on October 7 last year.

Anna Politkovskaya was one of the few Russian journalists to write about human rights abuses in Chechnya, and many Russians believe her murder was a contract killing that pleased Kremlin.
