The prosecutor's office in Bulgaria launched a raid in the education ministry over allegations of breaches in university diplomas' legalization.
The action is a result of a long-lasted cooperation between the two institutions aiming to bust a criminal ring forging diplomas.
The signal for the appearance of such "documents" first came from the Greek press.
Bulgaria's Education minister Daniel Valchev sent a letter to his Greek counterpart Marietta Yiannakou asking for more information about these cases.
Valchev refused to disclose the names of the Bulgarian universities involved in the fraud before the investigation is completed.
The minister added that there would be a new system for control over the high and higher diplomas' legalization as well as a public register with scanned diplomas. The register will be also applied to diplomas, issued abroad.
"The criminals forging the education documents have been operating for a long time," the educational minister assured. He added that the suspects would be immediately sacked.
