Bulgarian Cabinet Ministers in the Grips of Mountain Snow

Politics | February 4, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

Snowdrifts have cut the access to the elite of Bulgaria's ruling socialists who have gathered high in the mountain, in the resort of Belmeken, to tackle social and economic policies.

At about noontime on Sunday, however, Bulgarian journalists were still unable to arrive at the place, despite the efforts of special snow-cleaning machines to make way.

The Belmeken sports center and the leftists ministers and lawmakers now appears to be cut from the rest of the world as the distance of 10 km to the nearest hostel, where journalists were waiting in vain for the weather conditions to improve.

It was later announced that the ruling majority has agreed on a 10% increase of pensions as of July 1. In a move to tame continuing protests of pensioners, the promised hike is about 1.5% more than the initially planned, but it does not meet the claims for earlier allotment of higher pensions.

Heavy snow has been falling over northern Bulgaria and the high parts of the mountains across the country.
