The proportion of the Bulgarian population aged over 60 has increased from nearly 15 % to 22% in 30 years, according to the National Health Information Centre with the Health Ministry. The ageing of the population is a demographic process, which brings in its wake more health care problems. The mortality rate has levelled off in recent years at 13 or 14 per 1,000 population.

An upward trend in the birth rate, mostly among the urban population, has been observed since 1995. The increase is of the order of less than 1 per cent. Another trend is a drop in mortality among children under one year of age.Comparative data shows that Bulgarians are not more disease-prone than the other Europeans. Life expectancy has increased slightly, mainly among women.
