Nu Image May Face Court over Child Labour Abuse

US movie maker Nu Image may face court after the Bulgarian prosecution launched Thursday a probe into alleged labour law violations.

The appeal prosecutors will check the results of a labour inspection held last month that showed a number of irregularities in Nu Image Bulgaria's work with children, Labour Minister Emilia Maslarova said.

The Chief Labour Inspectorate sent the report to the prosecutor's office January 30, a week after completing the inspection.

Talking to journalists, Minister Maslarova said different violations of the use of child labour have been detected. The company has not met the legal requirements and hired under-aged kids on "unlawful" contracts.

The inspection has reportedly singled out 19 law breaches. If the signals are confirmed true, Nu Image, which bought Bulgaria's Boyana film center, may face court over charges incurring at least tens of years of prison and solid fine.

Nu Image's executive director David Varod was not available to comment immediately.

The scandal broke out after the Initiative Committee for the defense of children's rights and the performers in the movie and TV industry presented data connected to the exploitation of child labour by Nu Image.

The initiative committee also accused Nu Image of racial profiling when it comes to daily paychecks. Caucasian extras receive BGN 25 a day, African-Americans get BGN 70 and representatives of the Asian race receive BGN 100 to BGN 170, they claimed.
