MEP Immunity Saves Ex-Sofia Mayor from Court

Sofia City Court suspended a case of malfeasance in office of former Sofia mayor Stefan Sofianski saying his present MEP status entitles him to immunity.

The defense lawyer of Sofianski tabled a request for stopping the proceedings in the case over Millenium Centre arguing that his obligations to the EP grant him immunity. The court met the request after some uncertainty on the case, because the current 18 Bulgarian MEPs are not elected by direct polls.

The former mayor of Sofia was sent to Strasbourg as MEP on the ticket of tiniest right wing Bulgarian People's Union.

Facing charges in several cases of malfeasance, last year Stefan Sofianski was stripped of immunity on his own demand. But now it seems that all the other trials will be suspended over the same argument.

Signals that the amount set by the municipal council for the deal of Millennium Centre did not answer to the sum that was actually paid propped the court to delay the hearing until the matter is investigated.

Sofianski was already acquitted on the malfeasance charges over the deal with the capital's large department store Halite. The mayor had been completing a collective decision adopted by the municipal council and could not be sentenced for meeting his office duties, the court decided in June.
