Bulgarian nationals, living abroad, protested in Brussels against "the health insurance taxes blackmail" in their home country. The logo of the protest featured a black owl against the background of a red cross.
"In all civilized countries people pay health insurances in the country they are currently residing in and not in their home country," reads a letter of the protesters, sent to Darik News.
The last change in the Bulgarian health insurance law exempts Bulgarians living in another EU-member country from the mandatory health insurance tax. Yet, this law does not write off the payments for the period of 2000 - 2007, and therefore ignores the fact the Bulgarian expatriates have regularly paid their health insurance contributions in their respective countries of residence.
The "Future" union, which gathers together Bulgarians abroad, demands that a moratorium is imposed urgently on the collection of taxes.
