Bulgarians, living abroad, have risen against "the health insurance taxes blackmail" in their home country. Well, we - the Bulgarians living in Bulgaria - may well join them. The health care system ignores the fact that Bulgarian expatriates have regularly paid health insurance contributions in their respective countries of residence. And blissfully ignores the fact that Bulgarians here have also regularly paid their health insurance contributions.

There is no free lunch, the saying goes. But in Bulgaria's hospitals, you are not served a lunch, even if you pay. A check in the hospitals across the country showed that a bun, a slice of bread and 300 grams of yoghurt are all a heavily sick in-patient gets as his daily allowance. In the meantime, the patient or rather his relatives, have to supply most of the medicines and blood for transfusion, falling an easy prey to the black market dealers.

Add to this the complications of getting the money for a sick leave from the insurance institute and the long queues that disabled people are forced to endure for a few levs extra per month and one starts to wonder whether we are living in a third world country. No, we are not living in an African country because we can get a new EU health card and get emergency help across the EU. Very nice if we turn a blind eye to the loophole in the legislation that paves the way for siphoning the health insurance fund.

One needn't read statistical data to learn how reluctant Bulgarians have become to donate blood. Their absence from corridors of the Transfusion Center speaks for itself. One needn't read statistical data to learn how tough the life of disabled people is. Their absence from the streets speaks for itself.

The absence of Health Minister Gaydarski from the country may soon speak for itself too. Rumours say the brilliant surgeon will soon be packing his bags and heading for the United States to serve as an ambassador. He will have a lot more to learn there beyond the perceptions for a society's public obligations.
