Romanian Athlete Couldn't Have Been Saved - Doctors
Crime | January 22, 2007, MondayAutopsy reports show that the Olympic bronze winner had suffered severe trauma to the head and a brain contusion and had cracked the base of her skull. This type of trauma cannot be treated and lead to a very quick death, Petko Lisaev, head of the Pleven University Hospital has announced.
Cioncan's death on Sunday sparked a controversy between the two neighbouring countries, as her coach Stefan Beregszaszy attributed her death to the slow arrival of the ambulance. She was still breathing shortly after the accident, he said, quoted by Romanian daily Evenimentul Zilei. Lisaev, however, says that doctors could have done absolutely nothing to save her, even if they had been present at the scene.
The 2004 Olympic champ was seen as one of Romania's athletic hopefuls and her death shocked the country.
Cioncan was returning from a training camp in Greece, having changed her training schedule without notifying officials from the athletics federation, who believed she was training in Morocco.
