US Unmanned Airplane Crashes In Iraq
Politics | January 18, 2007, ThursdayThe Air Force MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicle crashed 5 miles southeast of Baghdad International Airport on Wednesday, reports say.
While the Air Force said the plane didn't appear to be shot down, the service didn't say why the plane might have crashed. Past accidents in Iraq and Afghanistan are usually the result of engine malfunctions or pilot mistakes.
The single-engine plane came down in an unpopulated area around 11:30 p.m. local time. There was no significant property damage or injuries.
The Predator is a remote-controlled airplane that can stay in the air for about 24 hours. It often flies at less than 100 mph on scouting and attack missions.
A board will investigate the incident, Central Air Forces said.
