One More Death-Sentenced Bulgarian Nurse Drops Lawyers

Another of the Libya-jailed Bulgarian nurses, sentenced to death in a HIV trial, will abandon the services of the current team of defence lawyers.

The news was broken by Bulgaria's Deputy Justice Minister Margarit Ganev, after his visit in the Judeyda prison.

After Valya Chervenyashka stated her demand in a declaration in December, nurse Nasya Nenova joined the team to discontinue the contract for court defence and cooperation of lawyers Osman Bizanti, Plamen Yalnuzov and Hari Haralampiev.

The two medics want to be defended in court by their previous lawyer Vladimir Sheytanov.

Ganev explained to the nurses that the change of the defence lawyer will delay the development of the trial, but they insisted on their decision. The Libyan and the two Bulgarian lawyers are the best defence team, according to Justice Minister Georgi Petkanov.

The two nurses also demanded French lawyers from Lawyers without Borders Organizations to be included in their defence team. This request cannot be realized because France and Libya have signed a contract for legal help, which automatically excludes French lawyers from participating in the HIV trial.
