There is no connection between the Lockerbie case and the HIV trial against the Bulgarian medics in Libya, US ambassador John Beyrle said.

The statement came after the US diplomat met Tuesday with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ivaylo Kalfin in Sofia.

The US are a good friend and ally of Bulgaria and will do anything possible to bring the five nurses back home, the US diplomat said.

Minister Kalfin and Ambassador Beyrle shared the opinion that at this stage it is unacceptable to talk any exchange of the medics on a death row for the convict of the Lockerbie case.

Last week John Beyrle suggested that it is difficult to develop high-level relations with Libya while five Bulgarian medics are on a death row in Tripoli.

According to a statement posted on a website of the Libyan opposition, Muammar Qaddafi has officially stated his conditions for the release of the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor sentenced to death in Libya.

But Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin said no official note or statement has been received yet.

The Libya trial has received huge attention worldwide, with countries and international human rights and professional organizations offering help to express their solidarity.
