US moviemaker Nu Image has been accused of exploiting the underage extras that take part in the films shot in Bulgaria and of racial profiling.

Some kids work for more than 12 hours straight as extras in unfavorable conditions, an initiative committee for the protection of children rights alarmed at a press conference on Sunday.

They presented the case of 7-year-old Konstantin Malchev, an extra in one of the productions, who worked from six in the morning until six in the afternoon, but had to wait until after ten in the evening to get his payment for the day. In the meantime he had no place to rest or change his clothes, not even a suitable place to eat, the committee explained.

They admitted that this was one of a few cases in which the parents gathered up the courage to complain.

Bulgaria's Labour Inspection service doesn't do its duty of controlling the conditions in which these people work and doesn't sanction regulation violators, the committee claimed, adding that according to the law in Bulgaria children shouldn't work more than four hours straight.

The initiative committee also accused Nu Image of racial profiling when it comes to daily paychecks. Caucasian extras receive BGN 25 a day, African-Americans get BGN 70 and representatives of the Asian race receive BGN 100 to BGN 170, they claimed.

How many African American or Asian extras do they manage to find hanging around Sofia anyway?? I don't think I've ever seen a black kid here, just some footballers, the odd GI and a few lost north african assylum seekers....
