Sixteen health mediators of Roma origin from the rural areas in Bulgaria received certificates for completed training under a Dutch project.
Dutch Ambassador to Bulgaria Willem van Ee greeted each of the participants in the presence of official representatives of the ministries of labour and health and the Representation Office of the European Commission in Sofia.
The mediators are trained under a program approved by the Health Ministry in the framework of the "Access to Health Care for Romani Women and Children in Rural Areas" MATRA project.
The project is being implemented by CARE Netherlands, CARE International Bulgaria and Ethnic Minorities Health Problems Foundation under the MATRA program of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It aims at contributing to improved health care status of Roma population in 16 villages and small towns in the regions of Montana, Blagoevgrad, Razgrad, Russe and Yambol by increasing access and utilisation of health care services by Romani women and children in rural areas.
The project works in four main fields - training and coaching of health mediators; awareness raising of Romani women on health issues; awareness raising of Roma youth on general and reproductive health; advocacy and media exposure, including policy level, national and regional campaigns.
