Bulgarian Bishop Denies Secret Services Past

Politics | January 10, 2007, Wednesday // 00:00

Varna Metropolitan Bishop Kiril, who presides over the Synod due to poor health of Patriarch Maxim, held a press conference on Wednesday to deny rumours that he has been involved with the former communist Secret Services.

My mission has always been serving Bulgaria's church and being useful to my motherland, Kiril said.

"I have always been an Orthodox Christian, a patriot and a fan of the CSKA football team," he added.

The bishop said that he plans to ask the Interior Ministry to issue him a paper stating that he has a clear past and was never involved with the secret services.

The accusations in Bulgaria started after Warsaw's new archbishop resigned amid a scandal about his collaboration with the communist-era secret police.
