Conflict of economic interests and personal reasons are the two main versions being investigated by police in Tuesday's murder of the mayor of a small town near Sofia.

Yanko Yankov, 58, mayor of Elin Pelin, was found shot dead outside his home, and police are searching for suspected killers.

The body of Yanko Yankov, mayor of the town of Elin Pelin, was found late Tuesday by his wife.

Police sealed off the area around Elin Pelin and blocked the main road leading to the capital, Sofia.

Witnesses said two unidentified men had fled the scene and a suspected car - Opel Corsa - used for the crime is wanted.

The name of Yanko Yankov came into the spotlight two years ago when his small town was indulged by massive floods. Elin Pelin's area was also rumoured as one of the potential depots for Sofia's garbage.
