Bulgaria's Soon-to-be-Closed Nukes with New Licenses

Business | December 27, 2006, Wednesday // 00:00

Bulgaria's Nuclear Regulatory Agency has already changed the operation licenses of units 3&4 of the Nuclear Power Plant in Kozloduy, which will be closed December 31.

The documents, signed Wednesday, will only come into effect on January 1, and were drafted upon request of the NPP management.

According to the new licenses the units can only be operated if the fuel is taken out of the core and stored in the fuel storage pools. This means that the reactors could not be used for producing electricity or heat.

The reactors will have to shut down in the last minutes of 2006, in accordance with the EU Accession Treaty.
