Bulgaria's citizens will be able to leave the country with their identity cards only after January 1, but they will have to pay a fee of EUR 50 when passing through Serbia.
Despite the fact that they wouldn't need their international passport to travel within the EU, Bulgarians should carry it anyways, experts warned, because it will take time for all the border officers to get used to the changes.
Orlin Nikolov of the border police has told state BNR radio that the Kalotina Border Checkpoint will employ 40 more officers in the middle of January.
The checkpoint will also start placing new stamps on passports once the country joins the EU, in line with the Union's regulations, he added. Kalotina's reconstruction, funded by the World Bank, will include an additional lane for heavy trucks.
The so-called one-desk system will be introduced by June.
