Bulgaria's deputy foreign minister described as totally unacceptable an eventual confirmation of the death sentences for the Bulgarian medics in Libya.

Feim Chaushev, who landed on a surprise visit in Tripoli a day before a Libyan court spells the fate of the Bulgarian nurses, did the utmost to assuage fears over the upcoming decision.

"There is nothing in the trial that disturbs me. My visit here is just a good thing I though I could do," Chaushev told journalists.

He said he is prepared for any scenario to unfold on Tuesday, when the court will either confirm the death sentences trial for the medics or acquit them after nearly eight years in prison.

The medics, accused for deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children with HIV, have been imprisoned since 1999. They say they are innocent and were forced to confess under torture.

The nurses' death sentence sparked cries of foul from Bulgaria and its allies the United States and the European Union.
