Bulgarian Intelligence Employee Suicides for Health Reasons

Crime | December 14, 2006, Thursday // 00:00

The 49-year-old employee of the National Intelligence Service Ivan Rakov, who was found shot on Thursday morning, committed suicide for health reasons.

That has become clear after the police found a letter in his pocket that says nobody should be blamed for his death and he killed himself for health reasons. The letter stated also he fell into depressions very often.

A graphological analysis of the handwriting will be carried out in order to identify whether the letter was written by Rakov, Sofia's Military Prosecutor Spas Iliev said at a press conference.

Rakov's body was found after 8 am on Thursday in the room of the guards of the intelligence service's unit between Zlatitsa and Pirdop, east of Sofia. He was working at an installation of the service and was on duty the night before the suicide.

He died of one bullet in the stomach. The police have collected gunpowder fragments from his hands and have found the cartridge case of the bullet, which was fired from a Makarov gun.

The gun was for duty use but it has not been discovered who exactly was personally responsible for it. Rakov took it from a case to which he did not have authorised access.

The police are investigating only one version at the moment - a suicide.

There are no data that the Wednesday suicide and the death of the chief of the "Archives and Secret Files" division Bozhidar Doychev at the service are connected in any way, Spas Iliev said.

His wife had long telephone conversation with him shortly before his death and she hasn't given any details of it, he added.

Doychev was found shot in his office at the end of November. The authorities' statement on his death was he committed suicide for personal reasons. However, investigation into the case is still under way.
