Bulgarian pensioners have gathered once again in front of the Parliament building in Sofia rallying for higher pensions and better medical care.

On the eve of voting Bulgaria's budget 2007 pensioners called for the planned hike to take place half a year earlier than projected thus helping them meet January 1 EU membership decently.

They also wanted to be exempted from the consumer fee paid by all patients going to see their general practitioner (GP).

Support for their claims was collected from independent MPs Stela Bankova, Vladimir Kuzov and Attack's lawmaker Georgi Georgiev.

Bankova, who was overwhelmed with petitions filed by protestors, urged them to be more aggressive and demanding when their rights are at stake.

The protest is organized by the pensioners' trade unions to add to a series of open-air rallies in front of the Parliament staged this week.

Incomes and pensions of Bulgarians will increase at a faster pace in 2007 compared to earlier years if all the hopes around the 2007 budget come true.

The draft budget provisions that pensions and budget salaries are increased as of July 1, 2007. Bulgarian pensioners will start getting 8.5% more and the minimum pension will jump from BGN 85 to BGN 93.23, while the maximum will vary from BGN 455 to BGN 490.
