Bulgaria's Navy's Time Running Out

Bulgaria will have to shut down its submarine fleet by the end of 2007, because its only submarine will not be functional anymore, Defense Minister Vesselin Bliznakov announced.

About 60% of Bulgaria's navy will be decommissioned by 2011 - 20012, Bliznakov told Darik News.

The Defense Ministry is currently allocating about 20% of its budget to modernization projects, Bliznakov added. He explained that the EU geo-strategy will change with Bulgaria and Romania's entry and the acquiring of a new east border - the Black Sea. Bulgaria will have to secure the aquatory, he added.

The Balkan country is also included in the S-17 initiative that will allow it to acquire four new S-17 planes together with 13 more countries.

Bliznakov also stated that Bulgaria would increase the number of its troops in Afghanistan, and that he already had a project prepared on the matter.
