An Apology to Bulgaria

Letters to the Editor | November 20, 2006, Monday // 00:00

Dear Bulgarian Friends,

We are a British married couple, currently living in the UK who are embarrassed, appalled and dismayed by the declaration of this British government to restrict the movement of Bulgarian (and Romanian) citizens within the UK from January 2007.

So much so that we feel it's our duty to apologise to all Bulgarian citizens on the behalf of every misguided British citizen who foolishly voted for this arrogant, uncaring, racist labour Government.

As Bulgarians how does this decision by the British government make you feel?

Don't you feel it is insulting for Bulgaria not to be granted the same rights as every other current EU state member?

Has anyone from this Government offered you the people a satisfactory explanation for their actions?

Perhaps this labour government feels that the UK is so wonderful, such a paradise that they are reluctant to share it with the rest of the world? Those thoughts could not be further from the truth.

In our opinion, the UK is in fact a country whose people have lost touch with family values, a country whose streets are no longer safe for people to walk without fear of intimidation and/or violent attack, a country where innocent people are being terrorised in their own homes, a country bursting with racial tension, a country with ever increasing numbers of homeless families and individuals, a country whose shambolic legal system fails to punish criminals, a country where many of its' own citizens are becoming ashamed of their own nationality!

The UK is a country people would better off leaving from rather than arriving to!
Which is why we hope to live the rest of our own lives amongst you in Bulgaria.

We have been fortunate enough to visit (many times) and purchase a modest property in the village of Nikolovo (Haskovo District) where we have been warmly welcomed and accepted without reservation or prejudice. Because of our wonderful experiences and gained knowledge we hope to make Bulgaria our permanent home.

Visiting Bulgaria has made us aware of how wonderful the country and its people truly are.

Your country has so much more to offer than the majority of people around the world (and many Bulgarians) truly realise.

Bulgarian people still have sound family values, children and young adults respect their elders and mentors. You genuinely welcome foreigners to your country and into your homes without prejudice or preconceptions.

You are a proud hard working nation with a generosity to others we have never witnessed before.

Bulgaria has a fascinating ancient and modern history much of which the rest of the world has little knowledge.

It is a beautiful country with so much to offer visitors from around the world.
Visitors will come, Bulgaria will grow and prosper over the coming years and you as Bulgarians will grow and prosper along with your wonderful country,

Bulgaria will become a country where other people desire to live.

We have fallen in love with Bulgaria and its people which is why we wish to live the rest of our lives there.

We are so committed to our dream that we are giving our UK house away in a competition for 25 pounds.........but that's another story!

With kindest regards,

Killian and Gabriela van Houten-Smith
