EUobserver: Bulgaria Stands Little Chances of Retaining Euro Spelling
Bulgaria in EU | November 10, 2006, FridayBulgaria is trying to retain the hitherto spelling of the word euro, which is /evro/ in the Cyrillic alphabet but according to Euobserver, it stands little chances to succeed because of earlier failed demands from other new member states.
Bulgaria's State Administration Minister Nikolay Vassilev will meet with EU council officials in Brussels Friday to discuss the issue.
The /evro/ spelling and pronunciation was nodded as early as the 1995 after the recommendations of national linguists were accepted.
Now the Central European Bank has started requiring that the country switches its hitherto spelling of the word /evro/ into /euro/, which would be in line with current EU rules according to which the word euro must be identical for all member states.
But the EU has to take into consideration the idiosyncrasies of the Bulgarian (Cyrillic) and the Greek alphabets.
Bulgarian linguists have said that the change would bring about confusions in the common and official use of the term and will introduce an unnecessary and artificial doublet into the language.
