Bulgarian Medics' Defence: All Incriminating Papers Are Fake

Politics | October 31, 2006, Tuesday // 00:00

The Libyan defence lawyer of the five Bulgarian nurses Osman Bizanti branded as fake all the documents that state the five Bulgarian nurses are guilty with deliberately infecting some 400 Libyan children with HIV.

Bizanti marked as counterfeit the analyses proving that the five banks found in the house of one of the Bulgarian nurses were infected with the AIDS virus.

During the second hour of the Tueasday trial hearing the Bulgarians' defence lawyer managed to wake up the napping hall by dangling in front of the prosecutors the medical specialists' report on the content of the five banks for 15 minutes.

The report does not have a number and it does not mention the banks were infected with AIDS, Bizanti said.

Bizanti showed two more documents that claim the banks were HIV positive and had the same number.

He concluded all documents have been forged. In his final speech Bizanti emphasized on several other crucial points like the illegal arrest of the medics and the photographs proving they had been tortured.

The fact the Libyan officers who terrorised the medics in prison had been proved innocent does not mean the nurses and doctor had not suffered from moral and psychological violence, Bizanti added.
The defence speeches of the Bulgarian defence lawyers are yet to come.

The court appointed another hearing for Saturday, November 4. It is expected to be the last one in the trial and then the judges are to reach a verdict. Bizanti has said that he is ready to appeal any conviction, and that he expects the court's decision mid-December.
