Germany Anxious to Spare its Criminals from Bulgaria's Prisons
Bulgaria in EU | October 23, 2006, MondayFearing that German outlaws may be extradited to serve their time in Bulgarian or Romanian jails, Stoiber called this practise "unacceptable."
When it comes to deporting prisoners to countries like France or the Netherlands or Sweden all is fine, but safeguard clauses should be imposed on Bulgaria and Romania, where the justice system is questionable and prisons are in a foul state Stoiber states.
Germany's Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries, however, slammed Stiober for not knowing what he was talking about, and explained that the EU laws only allowed extradition when the crime is closely tied to the other country. It guaranteed that their human rights wouldn't be violated, and that they would be returned to their homeland to serve their sentence.
Not a single German citizen would have to serve time in a prison in Bulgaria or Romania, the minister underlined.
