Environmental authorities said the norms of sulphur nitrogen and ammonia have risen following an explosion of a fireworks storehouse in Sofia.
In the early hours of Saturday residents of the neighbourhood of Nadezdha shivered with shock when a huge blast and whistles sounded off.
More than 120 tonnes of pyrotechnics and fireworks have been destroyed, police reported.
There are no casualties in the eruption, which eventually turned out to be caused by ignited fireworks, Nina Alexandrova from Darik News reported.
Fire fighters cordoned off the area, located at 123 Iliensko shosse, and managed to extinguish the flames until noontime.
The ignition released massive amounts of sulphur nitrogen and ammonia in the air causing nearby neighbourhoods of Benkovski, Kubratovo and Orlandovtsi choke with smoke.
Police found the store house was owned by the private company Enigma, which is currently under investigation.
