It is not only because of the all too obvious predominance of Americans that I dare challenge this year's World Stupidity Awards. That's no shocker. But since these are the "World" stupidity awards, I am tempted to take more than my share of cynicism and show that we, Bulgarians, still lead the world in something.

Unfortunately, "achievements in ignorance and stupidity", as the awards define their goal, abound here, as do hopefuls for nominations. Even more unfortunate is the impact these "achievements" have on Bulgaria's future.

Take the events in the last month alone.

My nomination for the Stupidest Statement of the Year honours communist Vice President candidate, cute actress Neli Topalova. She said she will work for opening the units at Kozloduy Nuclear power plant, but did not know which these units were.

The disinformation stupidity award for being Most Out of Touch with Reality will be easily claimed by Feim Chaushev, Bulgaria's Deputy Foreign Minister, who happily insisted the death-sentenced medics in Libya will be home soon. Only to blame misinterpretation later.

Former king Simeon Saxe-Coburg well deserves the honours for The Dumbest Moment of the Year for giving up plans for a runner in the presidential elections. Not to be outdone, his aides were on the brink of calling the current Socialist President Parvanov a liberal, a presumption that can claim an award in its own right.

Sofia garbage crisis and mayor Boyko Borisov enjoy big chances for the "Reckless Endangerment of the Planet" award.

The award for Best Furthered Ignorance fits well the blank looking and now barely articulate former chief prosecutor Nikola Filchev. He played ignorant so many times that a nation-wide search was called to bring him to the courtroom.

I will spare Bulgarian politicians the shame of being called the Stupidest Man of the Year, so that the electorate is not completely robbed of hope. But I easily find a perfect runner in the show business sector of the country. The Roma transvestite Azis was stupid enough to believe we believe his stupid lies, more particularly, his widely publicised gay wedding.

The Lifetime Achievement Award for Stupidity is still open for nominations. Any suggestions?
