The attackers against the United States embassy in Damascus - four armed men, shouting religious slogans - have been killed, international agencies reported.

No American diplomats were harmed.

The gunmen apparently blew up an auto before launching their attack, CNN said.

Video footage from the scene showed investigators removing what looked like explosive devices from a van near the embassy.

The US state department in Washington confirmed an attack had taken place, but gave no other details.

No Bulgarian diplomats have been injured after the attack on the United States embassy in Damascus, the Foreign Ministry said. The Bulgarian Embassy is located some 500 or 600 metres away from the US ambassador's residence and about 2 km from the US Embassy.

The attack came one day after the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States by Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda.
