Bulgaria to Ban Religious Symbols in Schools

Politics | August 31, 2006, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgaria's Ministry of Education will adopt legislative amendments to ban religious symbols at schools and universities across the country.

Currently, there are two laws providing for secular education in Bulgaria, but they do not concern religious symbols.

The ban will not take effect in religious schools and academies and will not break universities' autonomy since this does not contradict to legislation, the movers say.

Bulgarian Chief Mufti Husein Hafazov denounced the move, while the Holy Synod's speaker declined to comment.

"I do not think that the ban is an act of discrimination for this is a way to prevent ethnic tension outbreak", Chairman of the Parliamentary body on human rights Professor Ognyan Gerdzhikov said.
