Romania Threatens to Strike Back to EU Labour Measures

Romania's President Traian Basescu threatened his country would impose counter-measures in case of a block on Romanian or Bulgarian migrant workers.

"Labour force mobility is part of the idea of joining the European Union," he told the International Herald Tribune. According to him the debate was "being generated by political interests and not by the reality in Romania".

The president attempted to assuage European fears of a threat from migrants, citing the relative strength of the Romanian economy.
