FT: UK Fears Serbian, Albanian Traffickers if Bulgaria Joins EU

Politics | August 21, 2006, Monday // 00:00

Police in the UK fear that Serbian and Albanian drug traffickers may find their way to their neighbourhood once Bulgaria and Romania join the EU, the Financial Times writes in an article on Monday.

This is the paper's second article in a week, vocalizing Britain's perceived need of closing the doors to the labour market for Bulgarian and Romanian nationals.

The FT comments the statement of UK's trade secretary Alistair Darling who announced Sunday that there would be no "open-doors" policy for workers for the two countries that are about to enter the Union.

The government is yet to decide whether to impose the restriction, but recent statements show that the scales aren't tipped in Bulgaria and Romania's favour, the article explains. It then goes on to saying that another fear was that of foreign criminals accessing the UK through the two new EU members to traffic people and drugs.

Such concerns could prop the EU to block the next round of enlargement until a time when the two countries are better prepared to fight organized crime and corruption. UK's government should be quick in placing the restrictions, so that uncertainty is removed as soon as possible, Damian Green, Conservative spokesman on immigration has said.
