Cyrillic to Triumph from EU Rostrum

Bulgaria in EU | August 11, 2006, Friday

Cyrillic will become the third official alphabet in the European Union (EU) after Bulgaria's entry. The other two alphabets, which are currently in use in the union, are the Latin and Greek ones, International Herald Tribune reported.

If Bulgaria joins the zone of countries using the euro on January 1, 2007, as scheduled, Cyrillic alphabet may appear on euro banknotes by 2010, the newspaper added.

Considering the fact that EU has at its disposal one of the largest translation services centers worldwide, the union will not find it difficult to add Cyrillic to the languages it already handles, the media explained.

The media noted that EU expenses for translations, both written translation and interpretation, reached more than EUR 1 B in 2005.

Bulgaria claims that Saints Cyril and Methodius, who gave Cyrillic to the Slavic world, were its nationals, the author of the article said. Still, there is a dispute over the issue, since other Slavic nations claim the same.

More than 220 million people from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia use the Cyrillic alphabet.

Cyrillic is used in central Asia, too, where some 60 million people write their own non-Slavic languages using Cyrillic.
